Writer Wednesday: Week Fifty-four
Hey, everyone! How's it going? Welcome to Week Fifty-four of Writer Wednesday. This week I have another awesome author I met on the now defunct site, Write On. I met a lot of fantastic authors on that site, and I miss what I had found there.
Writer Wednesday: Week Fifty-four's featured author is Jessica Minor. Jessica hasn't published on sale sites such as Amazon, yet, but her books can be found on Wattpad. Find out more about Jessica and her works at the following links below.

Snippet Saturday: Just a Bear an excerpt from Wraith
Take Note: This excerpt needs some serious editing. I haven't posted in a couple weeks and I have no idea what day it is half the time anymore, so realizing it's Saturday, I grabbed a section I was working on to post.
Hours had passed by, and while I’d hoped
to get some sleep, I merely drifted in and out of a fitful rest in the
passenger’s seat. I felt the hair raise on my arms and a tingle, that seemed
all too familiar like an old friend, run down my spine. At the very moment I
gasped, Bastian accelerated the car.
I was about to ask him why when a large
beast breaking from the tree line drew my attention. There was no mistaking
that the mass of fur and muscle was feline, but I’d never even seen a tiger or
lion as massive as this thing was, let alone a native cougar. While the
darkness and speed of the car made it difficult to get a good look, I could see
it looked very similar in color to a lion, but it lacked a mane, and at its
size I would assume it would be a male. I, however, had no experience with
large cats, other than the occasional run-in with a cougar, and the thing was
no fucking cougar.
“Bastian, stop the car! Pull over!” I
shouted. “There’s a fucking lion back there. It must have gotten loose from a
zoo or something.”
“What are you going to do, stop it and
take it back? Besides, it was just a bear,” he said, accelerating even more.
“That was not a bear.” I look at
him incredulous before looking back out the window. “Look, it’s still there.
Like it’s trying to run alongside us.”
“I’m
telling you, it’s a bear. I think you’re a little too stressed out.” He changed
lanes, moving away from the animal and accelerated further.
I saw
the beast turn and disappear back into the woods. Yeah, I didn’t know what I’d
planned to do had Bastian actually pulled over, but something told me I needed
to come face to face with the large cat. I remembered the tingle down my spine
and the hair raising on my arms, and I wondered if it was merely a coincident.
Something niggled at the back of my mind, something Innocence had said once.
“Let’s
get something straight, the next time I tell you to pull my car over,
you damn well better pull it over. Understood?” I said to him.
“Sure
thing, Coral Ann. Would you prefer to drive?” He looked at me, and I shook my
head. “It was just a bear.”
“Okay,
sure. It was a bear.” I blew out a breath. “How long before we get to her place?”
“Probably
nine or ten hours. You still have time to sleep if you want,” he said, his tone
softer and more caring than before, and I closed my eyes.

Writer Wednesday: Week Fifty
Hey, everyone! Who missed me? No one? Eh, that's okay. Anyway, long time, no posts. I could make excuses . . . I mean, at first I had a legitimate reason. After a week of no posts, it got easy just to 'forget' to post. Let see, I had my appendix removed (y'all knew that), recovery time, I was tired for the entire week following that. Well, when I got to the point that I knew I should get back to posting, I ended up with an infected tooth, and that kind of knocked me on my ass harder than the surgery did. Like pain to the point I was in tears; I'm still on antibiotics and 800mg Ibuprofen for it. Looking for a dentist that might be open to remove some teeth—not sure with what money, I haven't sold a book in months and I've not gotten much proofreading work. I had a formatting job, but that was one, and formatting doesn't pay close to proofreading. This writing and writing world gig isn't turning out to be any kinds of profitable. Oh well. But we're not here for me and my whining. We're here for the much-delayed Writer Wednesday post that I've put off far too long.
So, the featured author for Writer Wednesday: Week Fifty is Fantasy author K.V. Wilson. Her books are awesome, and I actually finished reading Guardian while sitting in the hospital pre and post-surgery. K.V. is definitely an author that deserves support, so go buy her books. I'm looking forward to diving into Incarnate just as soon as I can. You can find K.V. Wilson and her works at the following links below:

Books:
Spiritborne (Book One of the Spirits' War Trilogy)
Guardian (Book Two of the Spirits' War Trilogy)
Incarnate (Book Three of the Spirits' War Trilogy)
OMP: Fantasy
The Contraption
Thanks for coming back to join me this week. Sorry, I whined a bit at the beginning, but please do check out K.V.'s work. I hope to see you all again next week. Remember, support indie authors by purchasing their work legitimately and leaving them reviews anywhere you can—Amazon, Goodreads, Bookbub . . . Even telling your Facebook and other social media people about their works in posts is awesome too. Indie authors need readers' help to find new readers. ♥

Writer Wednesday: Week Forty-five
Well, this (Writer Wednesday: Week Forty-five) is going up super late. It's been a craptastic week, and when I saw who (or actually what) this week's feature was, well, I wasn't too thrilled. But that's my problem. Without further ado, here's this week's featured . . . group.
As mentioned above, this week I'm featuring a group of authors instead of just a single one. This group is known as One Million Project or OMP. This group of authors was brought together by smooth-talker Jason Greenfield (he'll be featured in a couple of weeks). The goal of OMP is to sell anthologies (it's supposed to venture into art and music . . . eventually), donating the proceeds to charity. The hope is to one day reach and surpass £1-Million. There are two charities that are to receive these donations: Cancer Research UK and EMMAUS (which is a charity to help put an end to homelessness). The anthologies were made up of over one-hundred authors from around the world, with each volume containing 40 stories—except one, which has 30. There were four in total: Fiction, Fantasy, Thriller (awesome S.L. Baron and I personally proofread and compiled this volume), and Variety. In all honesty, my opinion is, they would sell better if the volumes were smaller and more focussed in subject, but this wasn't my pet project, so it wasn't my say. Guys, bigger is not always better.
But, my current feelings aside, there are some fantastic stories in these volumes. Yes, they're pricey, but they're for a good cause. Below you can find the links for the anthologies and other helpful links to learn more about OMP.
One Million Project Facebook Page
One Million Project website (There used to be an actual website instead of this Wordpress one, but I couldn't find it.)
One Million Project blog
One Million Project Twitter (Really this is just Jason Greenfield's personal Twitter handle; he should probably separate the two entities.)
I'd give y'all the OMP Amazon Author Page, but that appears to not have been created.😬
Books:
OMP: Fiction
OMP: Fantasy
OMP: Thriller
OMP: Variety
Hey, hopefully, I post on time next week. Thanks for joining me this week, even though it's extremely late. Remember, support indie authors by NOT buying/downloading works from pirating sites. If you're unsure, ask the author where their works should be available. Also, please, leave reviews for the authors you read. Honestly, it means more than you'd think.

Writer Wednesday: Week Forty-four
Hello, everyone! How are you doing? Who's excited about Valentine's Day? (note: not me, I don't really celebrate holidays anymore, and I never really celebrated this one) Is everyone ready for Week Forty-four of Writer Wednesday? Keep reading to find out who it is!
Writer Wednesday: Week Forty-four's featured author is T.E. Bradford. She is a 'clean' Fantasci (a term she coined for Fantasy/Sci-fi) writer and a hybrid published author, meaning she's published through a publisher and self-published. Her Divide series—what I've read of it—is fantastic. She also has many short stories I've really enjoyed. I met her on Write On where I first started reading a futuristic, technological story she was working on, which hooked me—kind of weird for me 'cause I'm not really one for Sci-fi books. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was called, but I don't think she ever finished it. I'd hoped she would, but her other stuff is great, so go check it out. You can find T.E. Bradford and her works with the following links below.

Writer Wednesday: Week Thirty-eight
Happy New Year, everyone! I hope everyone's Holiday season was all they wanted and more. I've spent most of the past week and a half fishing with my other half, as he had both the week of Christmas and New Year's off—paid, at that. I don't usually get out much, so it's been nice, but it also caused me to forget to post Writer Wednesday last week. Sorry about that.
So, Week Thirty-eight of Writer Wednesday falls on the first day of the new year. The featured author that gets to ring in New Year is Roxanne Smolen. I'm ashamed to say, I haven't had the chance to read any of Roxanne's work, but I do plan to. If you're interested in her and her works, follow the links provided below.

Check out Roxanne's and R.A.P. Smolen's other books. These are only a few I have listed, and there are several more.
Thanks for joining me for Writer Wednesday: Week Thirty-eight. Hopefully, we won't have any more breaks for a while, so I should see you again next week with a new author. Remember to support indie authors and, please, leave reviews for their works. Reviews may not seem important, but they're extremely important to the success of the author. Hope everyone's year is off to a great start.

Snippet Saturday: 'Sip and Spark' a snippet from Becoming
An awareness that he was moving woke William. Though, he didn't open his eyes until whatever he laid on jostled and jolted to a stop. His lids popped open, but the darkness about him was nearly as black as it had been with his eyes closed.
He felt around. Straw and leaves met his fingertips first, then they touched something harder, firmer. His guess was wood. He quickly took in the area with his hands. It seemed he was in some kind of wooden box, but the box didn't have a lid. He sent a quick 'Thank you' to the heavens for that.
“Damned hole,” he heard Petra's voice say right before the side of the box lifted, making him lean into the opposite side.
The box moved forward, and a familiar squeak met William’s ears. He immediately knew that he was in the old wagon from the house. The one the donkey used to pull behind it. Well, before the donkey died. They had ended up eating the meat from the animal, though it didn't have much meat to give. William was certain the donkey had starved to death. But losing it had made things that much harder on his family.
“You could have gotten out. Yes, I know that you are awake,” Petra said to him, pulling him from his thoughts.
“Sorry, ma'am,” he said. A pounding in his head and a twisting in his gut began in the moment he chose to speak. “Oh, I don't feel so well.”
“Don't call me ma'am. You use my name. That is the reason I gave it to you.”
The smell of the drink she had given him earlier tickled his nostrils. The sound of something clacking was followed by a small spark and a flame came to life at the end of a torch. Light bathed Petra and her outstretched arm. In her hand, a bottle.
“That lit faster than I thought it would. Here, take a sip. Not too much or you'll end back up in the same situation you're in now. I knew you had more than you should have earlier.”
William shook his head. “Thank you, but no.”
“Just take it. A small sip and you will feel better shortly.” She pushed the bottle into his hand, and he took it, though he'd rather not.
Bringing the bottle to his lips, he tilted it back and let a thimbleful amount coat his tongue. He handed it back to Petra while swallowing the foul liquid. It burned as it did before, and he coughed as it settled into his stomach.
“What is it?” he said. His nose wrinkled at the returning aftertaste of rotten blueberries and apples.
“Wine. Or it's supposed to be. I've had worse, but this is a new recipe a friend's working on. While it's not great, it does the job.” She waved the torch a second. “It seems to be a fine fuel, too,” she finished with a small laugh.
William's mind drifted to the last thing he'd thought he heard Petra say before he'd fallen asleep. He wanted to ask what she meant by I am the beast. He didn't believe that she meant it in the literal sense. That stuff was just stories.

Writer Wednesday: Week Twenty-nine
Hey, everyone! We've made it to Week Twenty-nine of Writer Wednesday. Honestly, some days, I'm not sure I'll make it through to the next day, but here we are, another week's passed.
This week's featured author is Scott Butcher. We'll actually have his alter-ego/penname show up here sometime in the future. I thought about having both on one post, but I decided to keep it simple. So, here we go. You know the drill, unless you're new. You can find Scott and his works at the following links:
Scott Butcher's Facebook Author Page
Scott Butcher's Amazon Author Page
Books:
The Soul of Nemach and the Temple of Bast
The Soul of Nemach and the Burbank Adventure
The Fairly Stillwart Chronicles
An Eagle's Heart
One Million Project: Fantasy Anthology Scott joins 39 other awesome authors to make up this anthology. All stories were donated freely, and proceeds go to UK Cancer Research and EMMAUS charities.
Thank you for joining me this week, and I hope to see you all again next week for Week Thirty of Writer Wednesday. Remember, please leave reviews for the books you read and have read. It means more to the author than you could imagine. Also, please don't download books from pirate sites; authors don't get paid for those books, and most indie authors can't afford to produce more books for you to read if they're not getting paid for the ones they've already written and published.

Snippet Saturday: The Making of a Wraith, an excerpt from 'Halfborn'
“So, Wraiths are basically executioners. Is there
really much more I need to know about them?” I asked.
“You should learn how to avoid them. And, how you
learn that is by learning about them. You're making them out to be all bad
because of your situation, but they came about by an act of love.”
I tried to put my personal feelings aside. I picked
up and drained my glass of its blood. The viscous liquid, left on the inside
walls, slowly slid down, back to the bottom of the glass as I reached for the
pitcher, so I could pour a refill. I filled it then turned to Marshall, who had
an eyebrow cocked at me. I assumed at the fact that I usually only had one
glassful.
“Do you need anymore?”
He grabbed his glass and held it in my direction,
eager. “Yeah.”
I filled it and set the pitcher back on the table.
I'd managed to collect my thoughts and composure by the time I turned back to
Innocence.
“So, love—not revenge or hate or a dispute or
jealousy or any other possibly negative thing—made the first Wraith. I don't
understand how love could have caused someone to kill their own kind,” I
finally said.
“Well, in all honesty, there are all of those
things involved, but ultimately, isn't it love that undoes us all.”
“Okay, I don't get it. First, you tell me that it
happened because of love, but then you say it didn't.” I heaved a breath of
frustration.
“Maybe if you hear the story, you'll understand.”
Marshall sat by quietly. I could feel the interest
as it seeped out of every pore of his body.
“What say you, Marshall? Would you like to hear the
story?” Innocence asked him.
I looked to him, already knowing his answer, but he
still gave me a look as if seeking my approval. I shook my head with a slight
chuckle. I completely understood, at that moment, why Innocence called him
Fido.
“Let's hear it,” I said, turning back to her.
“Okay,” she said, rubbing her hands together. “It
all starts with a couple: Dyon and Ixora. Both Inborn. They had been together
many years with Ixora giving birth to three children: two boys and a girl. One
day Dyon met another woman, Apholenia, a human. He fell for her immediately,
leaving Ixora and their children.
“Ixora became enraged. Jealous of Apholenia, she
found where the new couple made their rest. Ixora grabbed the woman from the
warm arms of her lover. When Apholenia realized what was happening, she began
to scream, and her screams woke Dyon. The moment Ixora knew Dyon was aware of
what was happening, she bit Apholenia. It took two weeks for the woman to die
from the venom of Ixora's bite.
“Dyon, distraught and unwilling to return to the
mother of his children and the murderer of his lover, went to his brother,
Xantheus. He told his brother what had happened. How he had wronged Ixora, but
that he couldn't have denied what he felt in his heart. He told him that he no
longer wanted to go on living. That Apholenia had been the other half of his
soul, and he was no longer whole. He wished for death, begged for it. But,
Xantheus refused to honor his younger brother's wishes.” Innocence stopped for
a minute, taking the time to refill her glass and taking a large swig from it.
“Wait, how does this explain how the first Wraith
came about if he didn't kill his brother? Or did Dyon kill Ixora?” I asked,
even though I'd learned she liked to build up the tension with her stories and
stop abruptly before the dramatic ending, leaving one in anticipation.
“For someone that didn't want to learn any more
about Wraiths, you sure are impatient to know how and why they came to be.” She
took another sip from her glass.
“Well, if you wouldn't just stop in the middle of a
story maybe I wouldn't get impatient,” I said.
Marshall laughed, causing me to look over at him.
“I personally enjoy how Innocence tells stories. I like the need to know, and
for it to be drawn out,” he said.
“Yep. I knew you enjoyed torture,” I retorted.
“It's not torture; it's excitement.”
“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, Marshall.” I
turned back to face Innocence. “So?”
“Jeesh! Okay, okay. Days went by, then weeks, and
months. Xantheus could barely stand the pain in his brother's eyes. In his
voice. Dyon refused to feed, and he turned into a mere shell of the person he
used to be. Xantheus battled with himself on which torment he could live with
easier, taking the life of his brother or watching the misery of him day in and
out. He finally decided that death would be a gift for Dyon and agreed to do
his bidding. It was when Xantheus said the words to Dyon and a spark of happiness
lit his eyes that Xantheus realized he'd made the right choice, for he'd not
seen that much life in his brother for far too long. That was Dyon's gift to
him. That split second of happiness.
“With his small stone blade in his left hand and
much larger stone blade in his right, Xantheus pierced Dyon's heart with the
small blade and with more strength than he thought he could muster, took his
head off with the larger blade. It was only when he'd made it to the lake—blood
and tears covering his face—that he realized he had changed. Leaning over the
water to wash his face, he saw his reflection in the shimmering surface, and
the golden-yellow pattern of his eyes had changed to the silver-blue that the
Wraiths have.”
Hearing the details of how Xantheus had killed his
brother left a flashback of my mother's death in my mind, which I pushed away
with everything I had. I couldn't focus on moving forward if I couldn't get
over the past.
“So, what happened to Xantheus?” Marshall asked.
“I'm not really sure. He wasn't really accepted
after it was told how his eyes had changed, and he left the community. There
aren't any stories of him after that. It took years for the next Wraith to
become, and then even longer for Wraiths to be accepted as a Born breed. But,
once truly accepted, which was after the Abominates came to be, they became
staples in the Born community.”
“So, you don't know if he's still around today?”
Marshall piped up again.
I was still trying to process the story, and he
wanted to know more.
“If he is, he'd be at least ten-thousand years old.
Even I can't imagine still wanting to live after that long. I suppose it's
possible he's still out there, somewhere. I'd never really thought about it,”
Innocence answered, her voice sounding uninterested.
“Really. You never wanted to know what came of
him?” he asked, pushing the subject.
“No, why would I? I have my
own life. I don't need to know about someone who's millennia-old,” she said as
if it made perfect sense, and I couldn't help but agree with it.Tuesday, August 20, 2019
Writer Wednesday: Week Twenty-one
So, we're just going to cut to the chase with these posts from now on.
The featured author for Week Twenty-One is R.C. Fletcher. Fletcher writes Fantasy stories that are similar to retellings but not really. She uses characters from stories like Robin Hood, Little Red Riding Hood, and the like to create something extremely unique and, in my opinion, original. Fletcher has recently released the second in her Rachel Andric series.
Here are some useful links to find R.C. Fletcher and her works:
